CutOutVid-19 / Reinventing fashion shootings in the times of Coronavirus
Meet the stylist collective that re-imagine fashion shootings in the times of Coronavirus. Using cut-outs, cinematic references and a futuristic vision, CoutOutVid-19 gives an answer to one of the main challenges currently faced by the fashion industry.
‘Post-modern retrofuture’ is the manifesto of CutOutVid-19, a collective of young Italian stylists (Camilla Rocca, Alessia Chiopris, Carlotta Bianchi), that came up with a new way of shooting fashion editorials. Inspired by the dystopian world of Brazil, the 1985 masterpiece directed by Terry Gilliam, the collective imagined a photo shoot entirely realized using the cut-out technique. Combining the faces of the main characters of the film with pieces from emerging designers, and a futuristic taste, the collective project us into a dystopian, yet contemporary, universe.
Starring Robert De Niro, Kim Greist and Jonathan Pryce, Brazil seems to be the right fit for current times, being one of the most fascinating cinematographic transpositions of George Orwell's dystopian novel 1984. After freely interpreting and paraphrasing the Orwellian base, Gilliam offers us the most modern and anarchist - both on a visual and narrative level - projection of a noir, science fiction-esque, and deeply grotesque world.
The styling choices aim to display pieces from new collections through the reinterpretation of the film costumes. Didu proposes a hyper feminine, subversive, and futuristic point of view on women, mixing elements of the Chinese tradition with western culture.
Other picks include exciting new Italian brand Reamerai and Marine Serre. Inspired by extraterrestrial atmospheres Reamerai creations lead us in a heterotopic journey, while Marine Serre, through its collection, experiences the invention of a new culture, a new mode, and a new way to be with an unmistakable creative vision.
The fascinating solution to the impossibility of accessing to studios certainly appears more aesthetically-pleasing than the questionable selfies and DIY bedroom shootings that have started to appear on many fashion retailer websites over the past weeks. It’ll be interesting to see if CutOutVid-19’s challenge will be considered by the fashion industry, both as a practical and cultural spring for a fresh start. .
