Investigating white musicians’ fascination with reggae and its groove, journalist, DJ and curator Lorenzo Cibrario (Soho Radio, Sugo) selected a flamboyant playlist where - regardless of genre, from Patti Smith to The Smiths - to stand out is the legacy of Jamaica in popular music.
"Reggae not Reggae," Lorenzo explains "is an inquiry concerning the idea of groove and related biases. Groove is a language that can make us dance without speeding up the bpm of a song, but just in virtue of its soul and mathematical structure and pattern. Therefore we can have a very 'groovy' song with only 80-90 bpm, which is the tempo of Reggae music. I asked myself if white people know how to produce groovy reggae music. this is the result: let's find out. "
Listen to Technicolor, Lorenzo’s radio show on European soundtracks and library music, every third Sunday of the month on Soho Radio.
